BLOG 5: PERSONAL OPINIONS
Child labour is a global problem that prevents children from realizing their potential. Child labour is a violation of children's rights: work can harm them mentally or physically, expose them to dangerous situations or prevent them from going to school. Children should not be subjected to work, since they must develop according to their age and it is a great problem that occurs in many situations because there are countries where poverty is so high and where most of the rights of children are totally violated. It is sad to know that there are those places where children are subjected to work that requires a very great effort, such as transporting heavy objects and others, or jobs where their mental and physical development must change abruptly due to the obligations to which they are subjected.
Child labour in emergencies
The most abusive forms of child labour are widespread in conflict and emergency situations. Children, especially boys, are abducted and forcibly recruited as child soldiers or domestic servants for militant groups. Girls are forced into sexual slavery as militants' 'wives', or pushed into prostitution or transactional sex as a means of survival.
Child workers who do hazardous work
At least 85 million children perform very dangerous work: forced labour, trafficking and bonded labour. Mining is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, but around a million children work in mines in dire conditions that can cause injury or death. Children also work on construction sites and in brick factories without proper health and safety regulations. Children are at risk from machinery, chemicals, harsh working conditions, and many other hazards. Those who are forced to become soldiers or slaves are treated very badly and suffer terrible physical and mental harm and abuse, as well as sexual exploitation. Child domestic workers are also at risk of sexual abuse and violence.
